Meeting with the First Minister

In a deeply meaningful meeting at the Scottish Parliament, members of the Scottish Ahlul Bayt Society—including its Director-General Sayed Razawi—spoke with the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon MSP, about the current state of affairs within the Shia community as we mark the sombre Islamic Month of Muharram.

Discussions were had around the importance of service to wider society; social works such as the upcoming blood donation drive with the SNBTS, and our partnership with Anthony Nolan and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service on stem cell donation; and the continued contributions of the Shia community at all levels, nationally and globally.

In this month, the Household of Prophet Muhammad is remembered across the world, principally Imam Hussain and his martyrdom. A Flag from the shrine of a grandson of Imam Hussain was brought forward for it shares a connection with our very own Saltire. The Flag was presented to us as a gift by the shrine’s leadership in Babylon province, Iraq. It thus highlights relations between countries, and is of much religious significance to our communities.

We thank Bill Kidd MSP as ever for his invaluable support in this.
