The Scottish Ahlul Bayt Society’s national campaign, in partnership with the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service, was launched in the Edinburgh City Chambers with the support of the Lord Lieutenant and Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh, The Rt. Hon. Donald Wilson, to raise awareness of the importance of blood donation in ethnic minority communities.
At an event in the Council City Chambers on the 18th January, Edinburgh’s Lord Provost Donald Wilson launched the Scottish Ahlul Bayt Society’s (SABS) drive to raise awareness of the ever-pertinent need for blood donation across all sectors of society in Scotland.
A cross-section of representatives from the sectors of civic, faith, community, public sector, and defense leadership, including Phil Gormley QPM Chief Constable of Police Scotland, joined the Lord Provost and Chief Imam, Sayed Ali Abbas Razawi, Director-General of the Scottish Ahlul Bayt Society to promote the cause, and encourage the proliferation of the directives and message to wider Scottish society. It is hoped the campaign will take strides in realising the overarching aims of public wellbeing, harmony in collaboration, generosity, goodwill, and encouraging greater support of the Imam Hussain Blood Donation Campaign Scotland.
The Lord Provost, Donald Wilson, said: “I am glad to support this campaign which will help save lives. Not all awareness campaigns reach everybody in Scottish society and sometimes it helps speak to communities and faith groups one to one. “Misconceptions about blood, tissue and cell donations still exist and the Scottish Ahlul Bayt Society is helping to stamp out fear and misunderstanding. Within 24 hours of giving blood, your donation is ready to start saving lives. If you’ve never given blood before, or you haven’t for a while, it’s easy to sign up.”
Mr Ifty Ali, Vice-Chairman of the Scottish Ahlul Bayt Society (SABS), added: “To see groups and leaders from a such a range of backgrounds, from across all the strands and threads that make up our national fabric, coming together and cooperating around something as universal and important as blood donation shows an evolution in our partnership with the SNBTS, who continue to deliver a truly lifesaving service. “We aim to continue encouraging donors throughout Scotland in the hope that they will save many lives, and look forward to continuing this blessed journey.”
